Couples Therapy

The challenge of couples therapy is to find a way to transform conflict into opportunities for growth and togetherness. Couples can find themselves in increasingly antagonistic, defensive or avoidant relationship patterns that lead to chronic, painful feelings of disappointment and rejection. No two people are perfectly compatible and learning to integrate two lives, careers, identities, families, etc. can present challenges. Often there are long-standing tensions that require resolution as well as finding new ways of supporting one another with the external stressors on the relationship.

My approach combines systemic and psychodynamic approaches. We consider communication styles and patterns as well as how relationship expectations are shaped by personal history, while exploring how to transform unfulfilling cylcles of relating into fulfilling ones.

I have worked with couples facing a range of issues, including depression, parenting challenges, addiction, and financial and unemployment issues. I am also familiar with many of the medical and emotional struggles that couples with fertility issues face.
